2003 Princes Highway Fire

The fire started at approximately 1545 hours on 12 February 2003 by a vehicle on the princess Freeway near the Churchill turn off.

The fire spread rapidly through blue gum and pine plantation (which is no longer present)

There had been a long drought leading up to this and many fires had been burning in the alps and ranges

The grassland and forest fire danger rating was very high, with a temperature of 29 degrees, relative humidity 25%, and winds 25-30km/h
